POSITION DESCRIPTION 
CHILDREN’S ADVOCATE 
 

POSITION SUMMARY:  Position is full-time and eligible for full-time benefits.  This position performs a variety of responsibilities as they relate to providing crisis intervention and advocacy services to children and families that have experienced domestic violence and also provide prevention education within area schools and the community as a whole. This position reports to the Executive Director and is contingent upon ongoing grant approval.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Evaluates crisis situations and provides intervention and/or appropriate assistance by phone or in person
  • Works cooperatively with the Director, other staff and volunteers toward fulfilling program objectives
  • Facilitates children’s support groups; develops age appropriate curriculum, maintains records, provides support
  • Networks with area schools to provide administration with information and training
  • Develops, schedules and provides prevention education programming in area schools
  • Facilitates support groups within the schools
  • Maintains accurate, concise and timely records
  • Completes state, federal and local reports for funding and statistical purposes
  • Assists other staff in providing and coordinating intakes, daily logs, records, contacting residents, etc.
  • Completes children intakes on each new resident to shelter; meets with children on a regular basis to discuss safety planning and provide support; meets with parent to discuss goals and provide support; maintains follow-up appointments with clients who leave shelter; develops safety plans as needed
  • Attends agency staffing, inservice and supervisory meetings as scheduled
  • Provides training and/or public presentations to various community organizations as required
  • Assists with agency fundraisers and shelter activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Post Secondary course work or equivalent in Human Services with an emphasis in Child Development, Child Psychology or Education. Relative work experience or volunteer experience will also be considered. 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Ability to communicate effectively with clients, volunteers, shelter staff, donors, police personnel, community agency representatives and others; both verbally and in writing.
  2. Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including personal computer, typewriter, photocopier and telephone.
  3. Ability to work in a crisis situation and possess problem solving skills.
  4. Understanding of domestic violence issues and ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds.
  5. Ability to prepare and/or interpret a variety of documents including client records, police reports, counseling forms, letters and other correspondence.
