SANE Programming

DSC_8403What is a SANE?

There are nurses in the Shawano community that have special training and education to provide care to patients after a sexual assault. These nurses are employed by Shawano Medical Center and called Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE).  According to the Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance, “the role of a SANE in the response to sexual assault is to provide for the immediate medical care of patient, to collect and document forensic evidence, and to provide expert testimony in the cases that go to trial. The goal in the response to sexual assault is to ensure that compassionate and sensitive services and care are provided in a non-judgmental manner.”

Why?

Working with a SANE nurse and completing evidence collection may assist in the investigation and prosecution of a case but more importantly the goal is to assist the patient in his/her goals for recovery. The physical and emotional well-being of the patient after sexual assault always comes first.  Assessment and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, possible injury and health care follow-up are also part of the care provided by a SANE nurse..

How do I get help?

If you or someone you know could benefit from meeting with a SANE please call Shawano Medical Center Emergency Dept. @ 715-526-8120 to make arrangements for a nurse.  Safe Haven staff, law enforcement agencies, victim witness offices and a list of other community professionals can also assist in taking the first steps to finding a SANE..
